Box Office: 'Ouija' Summons $20M Weekend, Keanu Reeves' 'John Wick' Nabs $14M

If it’s Halloween, it must be… Ouija? That seems to be the case for this season, as the unofficial horror entry for October put up a solid $20 million weekend. The $5 million micro-budget Blumhouse entry Ouija, distributed by Universal (Comcast Corp.), opened with $20m over the key pre-Halloween weekend including $911,000 worth of Thursday sneaks and an $8.3m Friday. For what it’s worth, the original intention, not so long ago, was for a $100m horror fantasy starring the Hasbro board game, but the relative failure of Battleship and a moment of clarity allowed cooler heads to prevail. On the other hand, Ouija isn’t exactly a bastion of original horror either, with mostly withering reviews (friend and colleague Aaron Neuwirth had the best headline: “Board to Death“). So the film is a financially smart move, even if the world is deprived on whatever fantastical wonders a $100m horror fantasy based around the Ouija board could have brought.

The surprisingly leggy (for a horror film) $20m weekend obviously counts as a win, even if this one will be gone in a flash once people start taking their Halloween decorations down. The film scored a decent 2.4x weekend multiplier and should hold up slightly above-par next weekend as older teenager...
