Being a child with a debilitating and unpredictable disease must be one of the most tragic experiences imaginable. Unfortunately this is a grim reality for children who suffer from sickle cell disease, which affects 1 in 100,000 Americans every year. This is a neurological disorder in which the body produces oddly formed blood cells, which cannot circulate properly through the body. It can result in all kinds of problems related to the cardiovascular system as well as stroke.
This is of extreme importance in finding a cure as stroke is usually sudden and often quiet; you never see it coming, especially in children that should be—and often appear to be—quite healthy.
