Black Beauty, the 4.4 billion year old meteorite, is from Mars

It has been found that Black Beauty, a 4.4 billion year-old black meteorite, which was found a few years ago in the Moroccan desert, is a piece of Martian crust. Scientists point out that the spectroscopic measurements of the rock match perfectly with orbital measurements of the Martian dark plains. These areas have a thinner coating of red dust and the rocks beneath are exposed.

Kevin Cannon, a Brown University graduate student said that the findings suggested that Black Beauty represented the “bulk background” of rocks on the Martian surface.
