Last year, scientists claimed to have discovered a pattern in the sky formed by the super-rapid expansion of space just fractions of a second after the Big Bang. Now, it has been revealed that they were mistaken and the BICEP detection was wrong.
The signal had been confounded by light emission from dust in the Milky Way galaxy. It has been unveiled by a team involving the US-led BICEP2 team itself. A paper describing the findings of the study has been submitted to the journal Physical Review Letters.
