Truth time: a "Breaking Bad" spin-off featuring a young Saul Goodman is a fiendishly awful idea. It sounds like the lowest item on a top 10 "Breaking Bad" spin-off list; something an author might throw in as filler.
So why is "Better Call Saul" so weirdly, wonderfully brilliant? It defies logic. Or maybe it's because, one episode in, the series has already defined itself within clear lines- tonally similar to "Breaking Bad"... but not too similar.
