Bell Labs scientist who paved the way for the modern world dies at 99

Dr. Charles H. Townes, the Nobel Prize winning physicist whose research led the the invention of the laser, died Tuesday morning in Oakland, Calif. He was 99.

Townes secured the first laser patent in 1959 through Bell Laboratories in New Jersey.
