Before toxic algae, Lake Erie was solution to looming crisis

A crew works on the construction of the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant in the late 1930s, building an intake water line to Lake Erie in the $10 million project that opened in October, 1941.

Eighty years ago, before it built its then state-of-the-art water-treatment plant near Collins Park and connected to it a water intake several miles off Lake Erie’s Jerusalem Township shoreline, Toledo got its water from the Maumee River.
