'Backstrom' joins the ranks of TV's genius jerks

Everett Backstrom, the Portland, Ore., detective at the center of Fox's Backstrom (Thursday, 9 p.m. ET/PT), is angry, bigoted, alcoholic, misogynistic, gluttonous and slovenly. Not sure if he kicks puppies. He hunkers down lazily in the lowest of floating homes, the bilge of a shabby barge, when he's not using his brilliant mind to solve brain-twisting crimes.

"He has no filter and he hates everyone. Stuff he says is going to come out as racist, but he sees flaws in everyone," says Rainn Wilson (The Office), who plays the crusty, cigar-chomping cop. "He hates no one more than he hates himself."
