Awful event left indelible scars

If one’s life can be measured by historic events, then the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger 73 seconds after it lifted off the launch pad 30 years ago is near the very top of my list, just below the day President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated. It was that shocking.

Things like that just didn’t happen. Shuttle launches had become routine. The only reason the Herald sent me and a young Joe Sciacca (who’s now the paper’s editor-in-chief) to cover the event was that one of the crew happened to be a civilian from our own backyard, Christa McAuliffe of Concord, N.H....
