Auditory Brainstem Implant Helps 3-Year-Old Angelica Lopez to Hear Sound for First Time

Angelica Lopez, 3, who was born without working auditory nerves, was able to detect sounds for the first time after undergoing brain surgery to implant a device that bypasses missing wiring in her inner ears.

Angelica is one among the small number of US kids who are testing the procedure called Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI). The device goes beyond cochlear implants that have brought hearing to many deaf children but that don't work for kids who lack their hearing nerve.
