Californians will often assume, upon hearing that I was raised in Minnesota, that my childhood was littered with canned peas and frozen corn. Nothing could be further from the truth.

My family was filled with fresh-vegetable devotees. My parents had lived in Southern California for a while, and they had developed a fondness for culinary flora such as artichokes and avocados. And, of course, asparagus.
