A three-year orchestra festival is in the works for Washington, inspired by a similar festival at Carnegie Hall over the past four years.

The Kennedy Center is organizing "Shift: A Festival of American Orchestras" with Washington Performing Arts to begin in 2017. Organizers are announcing Tuesday they have received $900,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as seed funding for the approximately $2 million initiative.
