GENETICISTS say they have devised a foolproof way of preventing genetically modified organisms from running wild and infecting natural strains.

Yale and Harvard University researchers have re-engineered microbes so that they are metabolically dependent on artificial nutrients which contain synthetic amino acids. The modified organisms cannot crossbreed with natural bugs, and cannot survive without access to the “non-natural” nutrients.
