An Angelic Diversion

Of the 19 individual dances in repertory during the Martha Graham Dance Company’s current season at the Joyce Theater—under the theme “Shape&Design”—10 have choreography by Graham (1894-1991). None better showcased the current good-looking and strong company of 19, directed by former Graham dancer Janet Eilber, than Graham’s 1948 “Diversion of Angels.”

The 15-minute work, which a program note says “takes place in the imaginary garden love creates for itself,” is one of the few Graham choreographed during her active dancing career that didn’t involve a role for herself.
