Ancient cities grew by urban scaling much like modern cities do today

A team of scientists with the University of Colorado-Boulder and the Sante Fe Institute discovered that the rules of “urban scaling” apply to ancient cities in the same way they do modern cities.

These rules of urban scaling tell us that when a modern city grows, its population becomes denser. They also tell us that the city’s inhabitants will start interacting with each other more often, and using the city’s resources more intensively, which leads to an increase in the per-household product...
