Amazon rainforest area was grassland around 2,000 years ago

According to a recent study, the Amazon may have been grassland earlier. Thanks to the natural shift towards wetter climate about 2,000 years ago that resulted in the formation of the world's biggest tropical forest.

Adding on to this the scientists wrote in the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) that the arrival of European diseases brought along by Columbus in 1492 may also have accelerated the growth of forests by killing indigenous people farming in the region.
