Almost 70 percent of Americans having HIV don’t have the virus under control

Seventy percent of Americans who have HIV do not have the disease in check, and many of them are no longer receiving treatment, according to a study published Tuesday. HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, causes AIDS Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome, a syndrome that destroys the body’s ability to fight off infections. There are treatments but no cures for HIV/AIDS.

More than a million Americans have HIV, and about 50,000 or more become infected every year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which conducted the study.
