British critic Olivia Laing set out on a quest, exploring the United States and dozens of books, to try to find an answer that would satisfy her. Along the way, she created a book that provides both a nuanced response to the question and a compassionate appreciation of six writers and their muddled lives.

The “Echo Spring” of the title is a reference to Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
