Flight QZ8501 crashed into the Java Sea on Dec. 28, killing all 162 people on board. A cockpit voice recording suggests that the co-pilot, French national Remi Emmanuel Plesel, was flying the plane while Indonesia Capt. Iriyanto supervised, officials said Thursday. Iryanto, a former fighter pilot, had more than 20,500 flying hours under his belt, while Plesel had just 6,000.
The co-pilot of the doomed AirAsia jet was at the controls in the minutes leading up to the crash, while the seasoned pilot was supervising the flight, the National Transportation Safety Committee said Thursday.
