Aim for No Ink on Tumor

Surgical margins with no ink on tumor have the lowest risk of ipsilateral breast cancer recurrence and represent the clinical standard for management of early disease, according to a new consensus guideline from several major oncology groups.

Positive margins associated with ink on tumor for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) doubles the risk of ipsilateral recurrence compared with negative margins. Wider excision does not reduce the risk of recurrence compared with no ink on tumor.
