African elephants’ sense of smell superior to dogs, researchers say

According to a report from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, researchers examined the olfactory receptor (OR) range encoded in 13 mammalian species and found that African elephants have the largest number of OR genes ever characterized. Altogether, elephants possess more than double that found in dogs, and five times more than are found in humans.

The researchers published their findings July 22 in the journal Genome Research.
