African-American death rate from HIV and AIDS is down 28%

Tomorrow is February 7, National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be proof that AIDS awareness, along with free HIV testing and better medical treatments, is working. The report says the death rate for black Americans infected with HIV fell 28% over a five year period.

HIV has plagued humanity since the early 1980s when it first came to light. The virus, which attacks its host’s immune system, has an annual mortality rate of 1.5 million worldwide, making it earth’s 6th most deadly disease.
