(Bloomberg) -- Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is fighting for his political life after just 17 months in power, as party colleagues concerned about his slumping popularity and leadership style seek his ouster.

Abbott, 57, said he and deputy Julie Bishop will try to quash the so-called spill motion when their Liberal Party meets in Canberra on Feb. 10. Under party rules, a leadership ballot can go ahead if more than half of the 102 lawmakers back the motion.
