When I first began meditating after breast cancer treatment, I couldn't sit still for three minutes without checking the timer on my cell phone. But I soon noticed that breathing into the emotions that arose -- anger, sadness, panic -- helped them dissolve. Quiet followed. Space. Peace. I now try to meditate for 20 minutes each morning. The practice helps me notice my thoughts and tune into my heart. It teaches me to stay present in each moment.
