5.8 earthquake strikes China

BEIJING – A strong earthquake struck a lightly populated, mountainous area of western China on Saturday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's preliminary magnitude was 5.8, with a depth of 6.1 miles, capable of causing major damage under certain conditions. It struck about 20 miles from the town of Kangding in Sichuan province at 4:55 p.m. local time.
