$49.7M For 'Interstellar' Is Not A Disappointment

The “mere” $47.5 million debut for Chris Nolan’s Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine, is being held up in some circles as, if not an outright failure, a relative disappointment in terms of expectations. The question is whether or not a $50m debut weekend for the outer-space adventure is “good enough” and if it’s indeed lower than expectations, were those expectations unrealistic? I would argue, and I will argue below, that Interstellar performed about as well as Interstellar could have been expected to perform considering all the variables. So without further ado, and perhaps speaking prematurely so as to nip this in the bud before it starts, let’s dive in!
