The Department of Energy in the United States has committed itself to working with IBM, NVIDIA and Mellanox in order to develop the fastest supercomputers in the world by 2017. A record $325 million will be awarded to the companies to fund the project.
The two supercomputers, named Sierra and Summit will be GPU-accelerated. They will be driven by IBM’s OpenPower chips, and Volta – NVIDIA’s latest graphics chip.
