It should have been bad. It should have been terrible. A live broadcast of the Hollywood Film Awards with Queen "People's Choice" Latifah as host? A network spotlight on the most fake awards show of them all? Even with low expectations how could talent go on stage and pick up these, cough, "awards" in front of a national audience? An award given to them because they were available to show up and their studios lobbied for it? (At least fans vote for some of the Teen Choice Awards!). Well, watch out Critics Choice Awards because CBS and Dick Clark Productions figured out a way to fashion a much more entertaining 2 hours than you've delivered the past few years.
Live events thrive off the unexpected and the 2014 Hollywood Film Awards had a ton of it. Major flubs, some seriously intoxicated presenters and a number of "winners" who had no intention of letting America think they thought the show was legitimate whatsoever. And based on social media at least, ...

It'll be interesting to see how Best Actor shakes out. It's probably either Keaton or Cumberbatch, and the Globes will have both win since Birdman is technically a comedy right? Cumberbatch seems more like the type of thing the Academy would vote for but who knows. Redmayne is getting a lot of heat lately too but I can't see him winning and I kind of wonder if he'll end up splintering votes from Cumberbatch. That's one thing going for Keaton. I don't think there's going to be anything similar nominated with him that could potentially split the vote.

THOROUGHLY enjoyed this. The Awards Season is offfffffff to the races. Lovely speeches by almost everybody. Duvall, much respect. Keira is awesome. Redmayne, such composure. Cumberbatch, as some said above … So smooth. Jack O’Connell, I found him very real, very sincere, and funny. JLo and How To Drain Your Dragon. I nearly spit out my drink. And Drunk Johnny Depp?? Amazing.

As opposed to every other awards show that votes for the same films/performances again and again? I didn't watch, nor am I interested, but at least Gone Girl got some love - and some of these other performances that may get nominated but not win anything (Keira Knightley) got some love. I feel like the groupthink about what films/performances are deserving of awards is just as bad as the process with this award. For instance, I'm fully expecting Michael Keaton to win everything this season because he's the anointed one, but I think it's a decent performance that's very well written, directed and shot, so it makes it seem like he's doing more than he is.
