Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S., yet about 42 million Americans — one in every five adults — still smoke cigarettes. This year, approximately 7,850 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in North Carolina and 5,700 North Carolinians will die of lung cancer.

The American Cancer Society urges people to quit during this year’s Great American Smokeout on Thursday.
