The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, has missile interceptors that are mounted on a truck or and are rapidly deployable. The THAAD system has the capability to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles inside or outside the atmosphere during their final, or terminal, phase of flight. THAAD is capable of shooting down a ballistic missile inside and just outside the atmosphere. The high-altitude intercept mitigates effects of enemy weapons of mass destruction before they reach the ground.
