What caused 2012's 'flash' drought?

The cause of last year's devastating drought in the central U.S. — whichcost the nation at least $35 billion according to one estimate — was a series of natural variations in weather that cannot be placed at the feet of global warming, according to a report released Thursday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The lead author of the report was Marty Hoerling, a scientist with NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colo.
